‘2023’ is the rather unexpected new project of the Dutch cult hero Wladimir Manshanden. 32 years ago, in 1991, Wladimir M founded together with techno icon Stefan Robbers, one of the first Dutch techno labels: Eevo Lute Muzique.

While Robbers (as Terrace and Acid Junkies) pursued an international techno career in the years that followed, Manshanden preferred to remain in the shadows. His discography is as small as it is peculiar. But his track ‘Evil’ is an undisputed classic, back in the days, picked up and licensed by the likes of Carl Craig’s Planet E and Dimitri’s infamous Static Tracks Volume 1 mix, while the re-issue a few years ago was picked up again by Nina Kraviz and others.

For that reason alone, ‘2023’ is special. But it gets even better. And weirder. On his collaborative, music is produced by either Stefan Robbers or Bjorn Telkamp, new project, he disassembles the eighties pop hits of his youth into sober, futuristic spoken-word techno.

On the one hand, he does not shy away from some cringe (Dire Straits, Simple Minds, Tina Turner). On the other, he pays tribute to some genuine electronic heroes like Kraftwerk, New Order and (low and behold) Master C&J.

The path to the bare essentials leads through a futuristic labyrinth. Along the way, you get hints of monotone voices, cipher codes and wondrous Dutch titles like ‘Privé Onderzoek.’ The outcome is alienating and magical at the same time.

On the b-side a fresh and drum heavy interpretation of ‘Planet E’ by Skee Mask. With almost non of the original parts available Skee Mask turns Wladimir’s vocal lines up side down and transforms it into a 140 bpm breakbeat monster. Closer of the EP is the strong and emotive ‘Disappointment’ track, for first time on a vinyl single.

Delsin presents two supplement EPs to the recently released retrospective compilations of Wladimir M. and Florence. On this first Florence disc its a collection of rarities. The EP opens with Convextions remix of ‘The Vineyard’, never been released on vinyl before. Second track on side A is the original mix of ‘Exploration’ as featured on the very first Eevo Lute EP in 1991. Side B opens with Peter Ford aka Baby Ford’s remix of ‘The Vineyard’, originally released in 1996. The EP closes with the original instrumental version of ‘Disappointment’, to which the lyrics and vocals by Wladimir M. were added later on.

Delsin turns its attention to the archives of one of the great early pioneers of Dutch techno – Eevo Lute Muzique. The label was founded in 1991 by Wladimir Manshanden and Stefan Robbers (who was already recording seminal early techno records as Terrace for Djax-Up-Beats). Channeling the inspiration of the Detroit originators and mixing it up with their own synth pop and new wave influences, Manshanden and Robbers (adopting the Florence alias) forged a bold aesthetic with Eevo Lute, both musically and visually. This was an early iteration of techno as listening music, with an emphasis on expression and narrative over dancefloor functionality, helped in no small part by Manshanden’s striking poetry. This double set of remastered, reissued tracks gathers together the earliest Florence and Wladimir M. material, largely recorded between 1991 and 1994, across five discs – the definitive document of a treasured piece of Dutch techno history.

Comes with inlay and liner notes by Oliver Warwick.

A excellent fusion of European/Detroit influenced 90’s techno with drum-melodic characteristics of Idm, along with ambient flourishes and some cool intelligent use of techno-breakbeat,delivering a creative post-modern si-fi listen with a solid electronic/techno foundation that keeps this album interesting throughout without failure. This is a sort of album that would not be out of place from Warp’s own classi Artifical Intelligence series – you can certainly relate to the AI feel and sound onthis album. Today (2018+) `Occcurance’ remains a great album with music that will manage to stimulate the mind, the soul & the body while complementing everything good about techno without depending on repetition or harshness in its sound.. This is quality techno in every sense that should be placed along with classic known techno albums that were ahead of there time but still remain a joy to listen today.

The original recordings for these tracks were made in 1991. First vinyls appeared soon after, but only last year, in 2008, a limited edition of remastered editions was done.

The original release of the Peter Ford remix was released in 1996 on blue vinyl. The additional black vinyl 12¿ version is a limited edition (200 copies), a tribute to the remixer and original artist to celebrate the release of the additional remixes on cd and digital formats.

Peter Ford was happy to give his impression of the already classic “vineyard” by Florence. The main remix has a bit of an “Ifach” feel to it, and is very much danceable, minimal but with a touch of soul. The big girls blouse shows Peters more subtile approach to the remix phenomenon. The digital release EEVO017R contains three additional, previously unreleased remixes by Baby Ford, all restored and remastered.
